DRILL COLLARS

As mentioned on our products page, 4145 H MOD Q&T is widely used by manufacturers of down-hole drilling tools for the energy industry.  Drill collars are a prime example.

A drill collar is a thick-walled, tubular joint of a drill string that provides weight on the drill bit.  Drill collars are generally machined from solid bars of steel.  This is necessary since tubes cannot be produced cost effectively with thick enough walls to serve the same purposes.  We specialize in drilling the holes that are required in drill collars.  In fact, we believe we are the best at drilling small ID, long and straight holes in 4145 bar.

Drill collars provide a guiding and stabilizing force in drilling activity, keeping the entire drill string on target.  The added weight and downward force is also necessary for the bit to drill through sub-surface formations.  A simplified drill string would include a drill bit screwed into the necessary amount of drill collars (as determined by the drilling engineer) and a series of additional (lighter weight) pipe that would run to the surface and drill floor.  All together this would be considered the “drill stem”.  The useful life of a drill collar can range from one to several wells, depending on the stress and wear placed upon them.

Spiral drill collars have a spiral groove machined into the outer diameter.  This is a measure that is taken to counteract specific problems that can develop while drilling.  One such problem would be differential sticking, which occurs when the drill stem contacts the sides of the well being drilled.  Slick collars, those that have no spiral groove, run the risk of becoming stuck down-hole.  Spiral collars reduce the amount of surface area that contacts the sides of the well, thereby reducing the risk of a stuck drill stem.

Drill collars are just one example of the many applications for which we supply material.  If you are manufacturing drill collars, down-hole drilling tools, or need alloy steel bar for some other demanding application, contact us!
